Age-Adjusted ER Rate due to Adolescent Alcohol Use

County: Christian
Measurement Period: 2011-2013
This indicator shows the average annual age-adjusted ER rate due to alcohol use per 10,000 population aged 10-17 years. Cases where the any listed diagnosis indicates an alcohol-related disorder (use, abuse, dependence) or external cause of injury indicates alcohol poisoning (unintentional, assault, or unspecified intent) are included.

Why is this important?

According to research by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, adolescents who begin drinking at a young age are more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21. Patterns formed during adolescence play a critical role in health throughout adulthood. Alcohol use also impairs judgment and can lead to other high-risk behaviors such as drunk driving and unprotected sexual activity.
