People Experiencing Homelessness on a Given Night

This indicator shows the Point-in-Time (PIT) count. The PIT count is a count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January.

Why is this important?

The Department of Housing and Urban Development requires that Continuums of Care conduct an annual count of people experiencing homelessness who are sheltered in emergency shelter, transitional housing, and Safe Havens on a single night. Continuums of Care also must conduct a count of unsheltered people experiencing homelessness every other year (odd numbered years). Each count is planned, coordinated, and carried out locally.

According to the Substance Use and Mental Health Services Administration, data collected during the PIT count is critical to effective planning and performance management toward the goal of ending homelessness for each community and for the nation as a whole. Counting those who are unsheltered ensures that many of the people with the highest needs are taken into account in community planning.
