Brocodile the Crocodile

An Effective Practice

Description

The Brocodile the Crocodile Health Promotion Program delivered a 7-session program designed to reduce television viewing to children aged 2 to 5 years. The 1-hour sessions occurred within a preschool and/or daycare center. Sessions included discussion of alternatives to watching television, promotion of reading at home, and a 'tv-free' week. Following each session, materials were sent home with parental instructions to further discussion and reinforce behaviors.

Goal / Mission

The goal of this program was to develop and implement an intervention in the child care setting to reduce children's television viewing.

Results / Accomplishments

Following the Brocodile the Crocodile program, statistically significant differences were seen in television viewing on weekends and Sunday between the intervention and the control groups. The control groups were similar in composition to those receiving the intervention, and received a safety and injury prevention program.

The mean weekly television/video viewing decreased 3.1 hr/wk among those in the intervention group compared to an increase of 1.6 hr/wk in the control group.
